Using the book of Job as His touchstone, Steve grapples honestly with the reality of pain in a fallen world. He asserts that when you are deeply distressed (what he calls the Broken Rope Syndrome), you can become either bitter or better. Though there are no easy answers, the Bible offers solid assurance that God hurts with his people, and someday he will end all suffering.

"When you meet God at the place of broken ropes, you will find something you didn't expect", Steve writes. "God holds some broken ropes, too. You will notice nail scars in his hands. You will see pain in his eyes, and you will know that the reason he speaks with authority is because the place of broken ropes is his place, too."
